Chappell Roan: beyond the Pink Pony Club

Start with “Pink Pony Club,” then follow the quieter side of The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess through “California” and “Coffee.”

Your first stop

Play “Pink Pony Club”. Released in 2020 and later included on The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, it is a useful doorway into Chappell Roan’s debut album.

Stay for the contrast

The album is more than a collection of big pop moments. Apple Music’s editorial notes point to homesickness in “California” and the difficulty of moving on from an ex in “Coffee.” Put those two tracks after “Pink Pony Club” for a short introduction that leaves space for vulnerability as well as celebration.

A three-song route

  1. Pink Pony Club — your starting point and the song to return to after the other two.
  2. California — follow the album’s theme of distance from home.
  3. Coffee — end with a smaller, more intimate relationship story.

Then try the album in order, starting with “Femininomenon.” Notice how the shift from its opening piano into a more insistent beat sets up a different experience from the quieter tracks.
